I was testing redstone IC powered street lights everywhere when I noticed this. However whats really bugging me is that that hole is full of water. That means the 1.7.2 generator did it.

Probably happened when someone ran reload, the region was probably active and didnt get written back correctly. Ill pull across a copy from the backup perhaps

If you can run a /chunkinfo anywhere you find that happening and post a list somewhere of the damaged files I can also fix it that way.
It appears to be in the realestate area of spawn, not really all that critical but i notice it cut into a building somewhere.

Ok apparently it pre-dates the backup.. restoring it would loose other stuff thanks to the anvil format, wierd.
Ill just infill manually

Now the next wierd thing, the Base Ship some blocks have turned to dirt or gravel... like that wierd world edit glitch we had before.
Dont think i have an intact blueprint on the base ship so have to be manually fixed too..
Or blame it on aliens attacking either way

Oddly the broken chunk is the oldest one on the server, it is where hedt spawned when he first logged in the server as the first player

nope that was exactly 1 chunk.. a region file however now holds many chunks.
So a file corruption in a region file - will on shutting the server down and saving the region, result on a "no data" flag on that chunk, so on logging in next time - when someone walks nearby it will "generate" the "no data" chunk, using the native map seed. Which in our case, gives us a lake. If you load our seed into the amidst program you will see the current location of spawn is in the middle of what looks on the map sort of like a giant water filled crater. Pity really would have made a cool spawn ... anyway.
This is a 2 edged sword - it makes region files more stable with corruption - as bad data will simply not write back to disk, resulting in an un-generated chunk which ends up regenerating naturally next time the region file loads. (ie a reboot)
This is because previously in 0.6 the generator created land. Then in 0.8 or 0.9 it changed again, giving us water there, then in 1.0 i think it gave us a small bit of land.. (the area behind Fallen Kingdom castle used to generate as water - then afterwards it became land again - at around the time drew did a regen on that area a 2nd time changing the water to land again.)
If you explore out about 200 blocks you see a few gen glitches if you are curious
