(NB to be archived once expired) Hi Everyone, A few Topics this week: - Due to accidental "portal" grief lately due to a certain long running bukkit bug since v1.2.1 where portals fail to "lock on" properly - nether portals have been disconnected. You can still make them, but all you gunna get is dizzy if you stand in one. You can still access the nether via the old mad wizards portal at the Citadel Spawn.
- Due to portals being deactivated - the nether access portal to dark fortress, spacestations and stargate in the end wont work. You need to use the Elemental's spawn portal, or the hidden brotherhood PtP stargate, or the hidden mine portal near the newworld region. (and pre-discovered FT points) Most of you have FT points already so wont be effected. But if you are doing "FT runs" with new players, keep that in mind.
- Have began reconnecting the old rail links as time allows using powered rail.. painful that it is. The Citadel train station is now sort of working but the dispense and eject function isn't working yet (craft book has it but cant get it working) From citadel you can travel to the Harbor station and from there you can travel to Brotherhood/Newtown station. From that station you can travel to Hole Apartments station. Eventually it will also link up with Trade tower and the maze again too.
- The fun park railway is almost complete except the final link to the second funpark under construction.
- Mass transit way. Ashes and matty and a few others started this a LOOONG time ago, Tangent had a go at hooking it up. This is an even longer railway that travels in a straight line quite a distance. This will be the next rail project once the Trade tower link is operating again.
- Standing policy if any "single block" towers are found that have no practical reason, they will be removed - they are untidy!
- Standing policy - as the transport links reconnect and roads are build, we may pass by many forgotten and rather griefed areas, There is several dozen (if not hundred) towns/cities/villages and npc villages all around the server. Eventually I hope to link them all with road or rail. If you find one of these, and the grief is older than our grief log, attempt to tidy/repair them, and put in a fast travel sign. If the grief is new enough to have a log, don't try to repair unless it is just 1 or 2 blocks and/or you can work it out from the bedrock tool. If it is too big to repair - Post the F3 coord or getpos coord on the forum somewhere for senior staff to attempt to rollback bad griefs. (dont try to repair these sorts unless you are confident you can fix it all by hand - and you want to)
- Standing policy - if jailing with no expiry - send any griefers to mars or cybertron. No expiry jails can be done on anyone who seems to have done any major damage; and does not seem to have logged on recently (under a month) More active users should be jailed a term; in which case any jail can be used. If a user only seems to come on once a month, a longer jail term may be needed so that the jail term is still in effect when they actually log in next!
- Staff are understandably loosing interest in the server. If you are finding dealing with all the nagging kiddies too stressful don't forget you can request to be taken off the staff roster. All staff can request whatever rank they want to be reverted to when resigning. It is preferable that inactive staff resign so that we know when a staff vote needs to be triggered.
- promote command is still playing up, it appears to be a limitation of the plugin now, with no expectation of a fix. Prior functionality is not going to be returned is what I gather from the plugin maker page. As a work around I have set some ranks to inherit equivalent ranks in worlds that the rank shouldn't exist. A currupted player rank can usually be fixed by demoting them until all worlds show as restrict, then promote them back to the correct rank. This fix will not work on staff, Donator or custom ranks however so be careful!
- I have identified a bug in NPCs with regard to "selecting" a mission. For some reason I have not been able to explain, only ops and the npc owner can "cycle" quests (using left click) while all players can take the currently offered quest (right click) other than this issue, quest npcs like King, Viceroy and Guildmaster should work as normal for the quest that is presented.
Confusing matters it seems at random some players can cycle quests with left click. So far I have been unable to find a solution. Even fully unlocking the npc seems to prevent cycling. One final possibility is removing the no-pvp zone flag at citadel as the pvp flag has in the past caused an issue - or placing the king in an area with no region claim at all. These will be explored further as I find time - or Mr Grimnir can have a go if he likes - he will need to setowner to himself first before he can move king around.
- On the up side they bug where NPCs return to their point of creation each reboot seems resolved. (correct me if i am wrong) moving an npc should work fine even if server is restarted.
- /quest status - still not displaying the running totals of quests and once again this issue seems to be getting ignored as V1 npcs are being phased out by the maker. Possible work around has been found - there is a 3rd party "quester" npc plugin which may return this functionality however it lacks detailed documents on creating quests, so I am unsure if it is compatable with out current quests "script".
I think that covers everything. Oh one last thing, I altered some settings on the server, to reduce lag, and for me at least it seems to be working. I have also dropped the max players down to 15 since I suspect our ISP is shaping our 1024mb up connection to about 512mb which basically means i cant improve the lag any further without a new isp, datacentre or an NBN connection. Sorry guys. Datacentre is out since we dont get enough donations - and i have not managed to get the monotization plugins to actually work anyway - so all i have is that paypal link nobody ever notices!

Due to accidental "portal" grief ...What portal was it...

Any portal within 128 of 0,0,0 in nether (or any portal under 512 of 0,0,0 in main world) will fail on the Z axis I believe, and just randomly create another portal somewhere; returning through the portal is no guarantee either, this also creates ANOTHER random portal, so you could in some instances simply go in a portal, it would create a new one in nether, then you go back in it... it would then randomly create another portal in the main world, you go through this, and it would again create another random portal in the nether etc etc end result was in some places there was 20 or more portals within 50 blocks of each other. You probably didn't notice as I had been removing buggy portals when i found them.
Got sick of finding/removing them!

Your gonna need the NBN. I assume you already put your name down?

Yer, but sounds like the gov is in early stages of scrapping entire thing except in a few housing estates.
Fallback plan here is find someone living in one of these estates and pay for their internet connection to host our server there.
But that will come close to data centre pricing :/
If i can get a tier 3 or higher, thats 50 up / down to the cabinet..
(which is conservatively 150-300 players on server at once - but consider we run a 1meg connection and with tweaks have ran lag free at 15 players. a 50meg connection (15 players times 50) gives a theoretical peak of 750-800 players.)
..tho chances are the isps will still be living in cave man days and throttling the upload to like 256k or a similarly gay speed that is obsolete and totally unjustified - so muchly shopping around will be needed if that ever occurs.
Other options is ask all our staff if they are getting NBN; and one of them physically host the server on their connection - but most home users wont understand why they should pay the extra $15 to go tier 4 - 5 - for the same reason our current government seems to think "6meg download speeds is fast enough for any household" - too bad nobody pointed out that 2-3 kids with an ipod and /or playstation plus a PC, and a pad of some sort will need about 6 times that much... but thats another argument
Lets just say.. Bill Gates once said 640k is enough for anyone..
Numerous salespersons said "You will never fill that 10MB hard disk mate"
and Tony Abbot said "25mb is more than enough for the average Australian house" based on advise from Mr Turnbull
And that sweeping statement totally ignores the upload speed issue.

NBN is due for me by the end of year. (pending the govt fallout) and you know I'd have no issues running the box here. Just add it to the rack with the rest of my business servers.
Will be getting a 100/40 link for myself at a minimum.

If NBN arrives here which most likely wont, I will be ordering 100/50 or 50/50 connection. It will be 500GB because we are running tones of devices and computers plus IP TV. I definitely haft to order 4 or more IP address's this time because I fucked the ratio up. its 1 IP: 4 Devices. Not 1 IP: 26 Devices. Oh BTW Grim are you running any public Minecraft server hosting services? I was thinking of moving my Minecraft Server around June/July some time.

Ok, if you can Qos off 20 mb of that 40 up - thats enough meat and potatos for a 300 slot As for tangent - we could throw in an i5 or i7 and more ram and your server could run on the same box anyway. Youd only chase a 20 slot yes? thats about 1.5 mb up needed.. Tho if we have alphawar on their too.. hmm anyway i have site visit... bye bye

Tangent: no I don't have any provisions for hosting MC servers in any of our Datacentres Once NBN rolls around, i'll no issues building a decent server. I already have a couple of spare dual xeon 3420 machines here ,just have to add 64gb ram to make it all happy. could run many a server off those beasts.
with creativity, we don't really need a separate server for alphawars. can just set it to a planet and have all permissions take effect there.
i'm testing restricting certain plugins to certain planets on my local server atm.

I don't "own" DC's as such we maintain/supply the hardware in 4 DCs for one of our multi-national companies we look after. a lovely web of HA. does your head in following the flowcharts Which is why I cant just tack in a MC server and mooch off the bandwidth

Reason i had alphawar as a seperate server was so we could have a more focus'ed set of plugins giving overall less lag; and nothing but kick ass action... and its the prequel world.. the world that was destroyed long ago by the time of darkfortress. It could exist on the same hardware tho, it could even.. if the plugin still exists be linked to the world link plugin (whatever it was called) this is a plugin where... two... entirely seperate... servers.. can be internally LINKED. So for example.. we could have a stargate that sends to to the OTHER server.. this would only work with NBN and LAN speeds between them however, otherwise our server would have been linked to Drews.. An interesting quirk of this plugin was... the ranks that applied to the player (ie permissions) on the original server would APPLY on the other server, not its own permissions.. which means.. well crazy shit like the magic spells would work on a server without magic spells in theory.. but this was ages ago- imagine those of you who play drews server, and here. here you are an assassin, or paladin... (haste spell, leap spell, backstab spell, blink spell) there you are like a farmer or something... You could teleport across, run link the wind, jump over city walls, land in a pvp arena, teleport behind one of drews players, attack him, use the invisibility or blink spell then attack again etc etc.. But in any practical sence, epic as that is, i doubt at least for drews server it would work.. BUT with alphawar.. say we got around to the "mystery threat" event where the darkstar fleet has just arrived on planet alpha, and you all travel from the future (dark fortress) to the past (alpha war) and help fight off the darkstars with your spells.. But once again very difficult in practice - and im not sure i can find that old plugin again!

Grim, Have you been to the "Global Switch" datacenter?? Global Switch Sydney is one of the largest data centres in the Southern Hemisphere, with 50,000 sq ft (42,000 sq m) of space and over 34 MW of onsite power generation capacity. Excellent efficiency delivers low energy costs to customers. The temperature & humidity are maintained according to energy efficient standards at all times. I don't "own" DC's as such we maintain/supply the hardware in 4 DCs for one of our multi-national companies we look after. a lovely web of HA. does your head in following the flowcharts Which is why I cant just tack in a MC server and mooch off the bandwidth
