TODO, need to tie in all the story elements in a story, and perhaps use in next server movie.
Probably change the moon texture to give it a more spacey vibe.. ? Make it look like a planet not a moon?
The legend of the Ancients, the Darkfortress, and the Stargates..
A long time ago, maybe 20,000 years ago...
(should it even be in the same Galaxy? Or perhaps set into the future 5000 years instead? NB: The story takes place in the future, and mentions the past, so lets say "NOW" is 5000 years from now, and they are talking about 20,000 years ago from there?.)
..There was a planet, whom the local Inhabitants called Planet Alpha. Of course this name in their local language, would sound a lot nicer than the crude translation we use here. But the meaning is the same, it was the first planet. The Alpha planet. This was home, this is where they all began.
There was other planets but their names changed over time. The reason Planet Alpha's name has been frozen in time, is because, you don't generally make up new names for things that don't exist anymore.
You see, this planet was destroyed...
Back then as now, there was several large civilizations. They all lived on Planet Alpha... They also tended to get into little wars a lot.. Not that this would normally cause a planet to explode.. these were little more than schoolyard fights in the larger universal picture; but it did tend to mean civilisations rose and fell several times in the history of this little world.
You see for a civilisation to rise and fall a lot, they tend to need something worth fighting over; and to fight with. You see planet Alpha was very resource rich, the place was humming with raw materials and energy. So much so, in the people evolved something a little like magic, in that certain thoughts could be manifested in different ways.. it also meant the dead were restless.. awash in the same energy; often could they be found animate and walking the land.. however this is not the topic of this story.
Here is perhaps a clue as to why they came.. by they I don't mean anyone who already lived there.. these were something else. Perhaps this place in the big dark empty universe glowed like a beacon in the night, attracting moths.. and attracting those that eat them.. things that are more comfortable hiding in the dark, and eat those that stray from the light..
..back to the people; they tended to be very clever and invent machines. Lots of them. War machines mostly, but they also build things. Buildings, vehicles, weapons, devices, things we still don't understand; some we understand a little; some that no longer work as the planet from where their power draws is gone.
When they got bored with fighting they went exploring.. and they were even better at this than war.
In their explorations, they discovered something akin to dark matter, called obsidian, it was made originally to protect their fortresses and machines, but they found a way to destroy this too.. by a complex process of fire and tool technology; which led to a marvelous accident - they discovered that obsidian, is strong enough to contain its own destruction.
In the right configuration, it causes space to compress beyond what should be possible, in this they found a way to travel "between" ; not like cheese in a sandwich, this strange place was like a shortcut that avoided the bread entirely.. they called this place the nether - and best of all - it had even more energy in it - making those who could manifest their odd form of magic, a level of magnitude more powerful there.
Of course we all know how much these people liked war, so of course just because they can, they decided the nether was a great place to have a war too.
This too led to new things; in finding ways to protect their new fortresses and machines; since obsidian had become redundant; they discovered bordering this "between" place something they named bedrock. Something stronger than dark matter. It was virtually indestructable. It also had strange properties, used properly it could offer a glimpse at the past, revealing changes and events that had occured nearby. In expermenting with this, another discovery was made. By using a small amount of this material within a clock like device, and the perfections of a block of pure diamond, they found something even better than the nether.
They found a way to not only skip the bread, but to throw the cheese away too, they found a way to connect two places together, no matter what the distance... They discovered Stargates. They placed their finest example of this in their bedrock fortress, at the centre of all the factions on Planet Alpha. But it seems they were not the first.. because as they experimented with these strange new devices, they discovered echos, voices in the dark.. they thought these were other gates placed in hidden places by the rival factions so they pushed and probed and shifted phase until they discovered the cause of these echos; by setting their gates in such a way as to have an affinity with these anomalies; a connection was made. Not to secret places of their rivals as expected, but to devices on entirely different worlds.
Most of these gates were small static devices obviously designed to only go originally to the one place. They called these smaller units simply Stargates. However, they found one stargate acting oddly, it connected more than one location. The first a single point gate, but on returning they were thrown to a 3rd unexpected destination; this was a multi location gate; only much much older than their own. They called this new device the AlphaGate as it was built before their own. Their own gate located in the original Bedrock fortress was named the Betagate as it had been built after the much older one they discovered. The Alphagate; located on a derelict space ship, was transported to a nearby planet. A third and 4th gate was also made one was thought to have been loaded on a lost starship; the other who knows, time has forgotten what became of these, all that remains is the number that were built.
Meanwhile they were all still busy fighting with each other; levelling entire continents, and rebuilding them again, all this decadant use of power drew them. Nobody knows where they came from. Some thought the nether, except no sign was ever found of them there.. all they knew was they came from the end of deep space.. and they were old, perhaps older than those that made the Alphagate, or perhaps younger; who can say as the Alphagate was perhaps thousands if not millions of years old.
They came in a machine so big it blocked out the sky, and it had many smaller machines, it was a giant fortress; like a Dark shadow sun in the sky; surrounded by lots of small Dark Stars...
It came unannounced, the factions were so busy fighting it was only the shadow it threw that gave them pause to look up.. and the weapons, the people knew weapons, but these were something else entirely. These were so terrible, not about war or defense, these things only destroyed things... entire worlds.
To those in these dark machines, the people of this world were nothing more than bugs. Not a thing to even consider; they were more interested in harvesting the abundant energy and resources from this planet that attracted them so.. these creatures were miners of a sort, but on a global scale.
So initially they completely disregarded them. Ripping out massive chunks of the planet, people, mountain or city, no distinction was made.. if anything the unfortunate residents of the particular bit of rock they were ripping apart added to the total energy they reaped from it...
It was not until against the combined might of the now united factions of people that they noticed a few of their smaller darkstars were missing, not just missing but captured and being turned against them.. how dare they, these ants challenge their might...
(At this point the factions are united to fight this thing. But the thing still destroys the entire Alpha Planet, leaving the asteroid belt.)
The defenders fight on, even tho they have no home planet left to fight for.. they launch their attacks with captured or constructed battleships; using the one thing that survived the destruction of the planet, which also seemed immune to this Dark Fortress fleet's weapons - the great Bedrock fortress that contained their precious Beta Stargate; that in the ensuing chaos caused by the break up of their planet was thrown essentially intact into deep space.. making a perfect Star Base..
This fleet of destruction, this Dark Fortress and its terrible Darkstars for this is what they now called them; moved towards another nearby planet, where the survivors of the Alpha planet people sent their loved ones.
Here it seems was where their last stand was to take place.... the battle was fierce, using the combined and mightiest might of the Alpha people, and the worst and evilest destruction that these captured Darkstars could give back to their former owners; a battle much more fierce than before, because those fighting had both everything, and nothing left to live for - and were like a wounded animal backed into a corner.. protecting its young.. their sacrifices were so great; ultimately it caused another fall of their civilization.. but they stopped it.. they drew a line, although it cost them their lives, and this evil thing, this destroyer of planets was stopped...and driven away.. and a precious few people hidden away by each faction survived...
...Fast forward 20000 years, and the survivors not even knowing they are such rise again, their fledgling civilization of Knights, kings, wizards and Citizens spreading over the new world... eventually discovering, small remnants of their once great past..
First - forgotten stockpiles of obsidian are uncovered, perhaps the only thing left of the ruins they were placed in five millennium earlier.. and so mad wizards and alchemists alike rediscover the nether world..
Secondly - To their surprise they find even more clues and remnants of their ancient ancestors by exploring the forgotten tunnels and portals discovered in this "between" place; finding long disused shortcuts to places on their world they might never have found in another five millennium's...
Thirdly - In time they rediscover the magics, being greatly enhanced in the nether, and obvious to even the most dimwitted - and small fragments of their history.. and technology.. long disused and forgotten in this hellish place.
Lastly - an almost spooky coincidence, a small king of a kingdom taken from one of those very mad wizards who lost themself in the nether, expands his wine cellar one day and stumbles onto a great machine long buried under his Citadel... the Alphagate.
Almost at the same moment, the explorers of other factions searching the nether world discover at the end of a long disused railway; a portal leading to a great fortress, astride the biggest hole they have ever seen.. while yet another faction uncovers a strange gateway under a mysterious floating island, that simply vanished one day.. drawing their attention.
Suddenly everyone had in their hands examples of the most advanced technology - abandoned space ships.. space stations, impossible tools, machines, portals, and the precious stargates..... virtually overnight these wielders of sword and bow, are now masters of the universe.. but are they ready?
But even here our story continues - even more wonders are discovered; on a distant world, yet another Stargate is found next to the hulk of a crashed Battleship.. and with all these stargates more and more worlds are discovered..
But in deep space, rumblings are heard... a mayday? In a corner of the universe explorers thought empty, a place between here and there; they inadvertently awaken a sleeping horror... and are promptly never heard from again... eventually a video feed is decoded.. and the ships sent to investigate the mayday go silent too... what has been woken?
Three factions now united, race to awaken their own sleeping giants in the abandoned shipyards in space, in the secret places found on the world.. for they fear they must prepare for war with tools they yet lack understanding of.. against an enemy they understand not..
(Notes: the bedrock plot elements tend to hint that a stargate made of bedrock might do something quite odd too.. much like the obsidian ones do now; may be worth adding something to the world assuming the plugin allows bedrock portals, it could send the player to a worm hole type effect and to something from the past; might be a todo construction project for me there)

This reply is for my own reference, please ignore: Game Back story -
You find yourself in a strange place of machines, monsters, mages, merchants and gods, populated by various items, buildings, lost treasures and ruins. Oddly there exists here a strange combination of medieval knights and space ships.. suggesting that in the past the peoples here were exposed to advanced technology before they were entirely ready for it.. Amoung the people here, A legend is spoken of an ancient people, so old nobody recalls their name. They built impossible things, in impossible places, They had much power, they could move mountains; fly through space, raise the dead or summon the living - yet something happened to them. If you listen carefully; you hear hushed whispers... nightmares never fully woken from, children at night screaming, a legacy of scars upon the land, shadows in the distance, strange sounds behind you; odd happenings in the night; their memory alone wakes the dead.
The Citadel you find yourself near hosts the initial shopping areas, merchants and travel facilities.
At night creatures from the graveyard (or even other players) outside try to break through the gatehouse and invade the citadel.
There is also a public mine underneath if you can find the entrance. What you find in there of treasures man and monsters is a mystery.
Prepare to stake out your own place in this world. Land can be claimed, bought, sold or begged for; which means you need to go exploring and find an area nobody owns, or ask to be added to an existing land title.
It is not essential to own land; you can build and work anywhere not assigned to someone, or in unlocked districts just remember we cant save you from Grief on public land.
-------- The Dark Fortress Universe is a dark Gothic Medieval Steam Punk fantasy universe.
It contains elements of medieval game-play paired with sci-fi. Think of it as what would happen if you combined Assassins Creed, The world of Titan, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and Dungeons and Dragons. It comprises as a whole, of several unique planets, loosely linked together with a derelict network of stargates and abandoned space ships.
How we pull this off is the following premise - What would happen if we constructed a universe where, advanced civilizations exist, or have risen and fallen in the past, and combined this with less advanced, primitive or even magical civilizations, and these two worlds collided?
An example that was never used in an aborted promo video was a space ship merged with a sailing ship.
Just to confuse matters there are a number of unknowns.. such as Who built the darkstars and why? What happened to the ancients that built the dark fortress and the star gates? Why did they build them? Who were they trying to protect them self from... or are they even the victims -- were they the predators? Was it an insurrection?
What tore up the world so much? Where have they all gone? Why can we only ever find crashed or abandoned examples of their ingenuity?
Are all the sides involved civilizations that have only just entered the technology age... or are they fallen civilizations that have only just started to recover... or worse still.. are they a new civilization that stumbled on the remains of a civilization so great that they can not even imagine what could have befallen them...
... and what if that same fate was planned for them.
Well you get the idea.
Basically we have several characters here. Normal players. Citizens of the world Paladins Assassins The Ancients The pig-zombie technicians who worked for them The unknown threat The Necromancers the Technomancers Various land holders and empires.
WTF is a Darkstar? There was a long time ago a short story written, and I think a movie made about a ship that (much like the Transformers plot, which i believe rip off this story) involves a deep space ship that went around looking for unstable solar systems, to which it would either destroy the planet or sun, with the aim of mining it I believe.
In other words, a Darkstar is a space ship capable of taking apart an entire planet or Star.... now what would happen if one of.. (or an entire fleet of) these got into the wrong hands...
What is the DarkFortress A large heavy fortified fortress, located on an island a long way into the main world. It was discovered by early explorers settling this world, and can be located by traveling via the nether along the derelict railway, or by locating stargates that can access it.
It is generally thought by the "science" teams to be where Darkstars refuel or get refitted for various missions. Also where the ore was probably meant to be processed from the Darkstar Mining operations. Or at least it was until it was apparently abandoned. Given the Medium and Smaller darkstars or the "Mini Stars" only seem capable of drilling to bedrock, or general demolition, it is suspected the Darkfortress itself may be another class of Darkstar. A fjking big one. Some researchers speculate that even if the entire planet exploded the darkstar is sufficiently fortified that it could survive largely intact.
The region is generally considered to be under the control of the Paladins; and is suspected to be where they hide their fleet of space crafts.
What are paladins? A military force, of a generally moralistic clerics. Not much is known about their ranks, other than Viceroy appears to be in charge, and members include the mad wizard and pig_assasin. As is generally the case they can go too far in the name of Ideology. They mainly operate out of the Allansia continent region, and from Dark Fortress Island. As such they mainly occupy the homeworld. Except for the fact they are in control of the Dark fortress Facility, which gives them access to unknown resources.. they would probably have only been a minority. It is suspected they are in possession of a working stargate; and know the whereabouts of a number of relics from the old war between the Ancients and the Unknown Ones.
What is the Brotherhood? The brotherhood is another powerful faction on the server, of Assassins, think Assassins creed fast forward 300 years; so they have a bit of a Halo Flavor to them. They are currently headed up by Warpig. They mainly occupy an area which by treaty is considered their sovereign homeland on the homeworld. They also conduct regular scouting missions to other planets, control the main space port in end space, and have claimed an entire planet of their own; after their scouts discovered a stargate and a number of crashed star ships.
Who else are there? There are two break away factions of Assassins, little is known about them, one group was lead by Chadinha, another is almost completely unknown. This group occupy the region known as Derp City, a massive sprawling metropolis of various disconnected communities. The other group maintains a number of small remote strongholds, and are very rarely heard from.
There is also the Citizens of Darkfortress, headed by the King at the Citadel, and enforced by Knights and Soldiers. They are like the UN, and seek to keep the other factions from open war. They are also suspected to own a stargate, after his miners made a discovery while building the basement of the citadel.
There is also Overlord Grimnir, he occupies a small island on the homeworld, and maintains a fixed stargate to planet grimgate which is completely under his control. Other than intercepted reports from researchers he has hired in the past; little is known about him; or where the source of his power lies. ----- As you can see I am attempting to build a backstory here..
So any suggestions are welcome.
I know ive not mentioned the Wizards/Elementals/Necromancers/Technomancers
These ranks are considered unilateral groups with only loose ties to one another, and are generally considered members of the other factions.
Technomancers are a bit like timelords, or perhaps the ancients themself. They can make machines work; and are difficult to kill. They work with the other factions as scientists and researchers.
..what does that make the Necromancers.. hmmm the unknown threat? a shadowy enclave of political intrigue (ALA the Sith in Starwars) *shrug* who knows --- The Necromancers could be a small faction of Dark Mages plotting to destroy the world? It seems like the sort of being for a Necromancer, with dark magic and all, summoning the dead etc. I think it would be a cool sort of thing, the Assassins and Paladins could sign a Treaty so they can unite and help save the world from the Necromancers? I dunno, just some ideas.
Another idea for the Necromancers that I just thought of; They could be old members of some of the other Factions, but got shunned and turned evil to plot revenge? I have no idea where these thoughts are coming from.. I think i'm reading too many fantasy books :/ --- Brotherhood kingdom is located near spawn, it can be accessed by exiting the Citadel through the main gate, turning right and following the path left around past sam castle.
It contains several towns and communities and exhibits.
It is also the base of the Shadowy group known as Assassins.. muahahaha. --- Assassin [Crusaders] Guild « Thread Started on Aug 18, 2012, 4:32pm »

Ok so far I think everything ties in with the plot elements previously hinted at. Probably enough material here for an entire book with someone creative enough, and plenty for the next movie that we make.
Ideally we should integrate all the above in one form or another, and maybe a "tech tree" diagram for the NPC ranking/loot quests into a webpage somewhere.
Any volunteers ?
I put the old original teaser movie on youtube too god help me...

Congratulations Tangent, you've broken the servers record of words! Word count: 4436 Anyway, Your going to make a movie? thats going to go for a VERY long time... seeing as the basic tour of the server took over an hour.

A tour was just a tour, so an action movie wouldn't need that much footage.
Besides i probably wont start any movie until i have enough back story ironed out, at which point i may convert it to a simple movie script; and make a start. Although I have been reviewing royalty free music for the title credits of the movie, ive not gotten any further.

If anyone is interested.. I uploaded an early test of the starting credits for the movie....
Feel free to offer suggestions for the next bits of the movie. This scene features a pimped out version of ln735's original capital ship from the original Capital ship battle near brotherhood - and he starrs as the captain in this scene..
This is my last duty as captain of this ship. The last surviving defender. Everybody else is dead. The ships controls are jammed and I don't have enough air left to try to fix them anyway..
Perhaps the cryo chamber will save me, or perhaps it too is broken.. but before I take that risk I must leave a final log, in the hope any of the colonists have survived and find me.
My family came from Planet Alpha. Of course in our old language, it sounded a lot nicer than the crude translation I use here. But the meaning is the same, it was the first planet. The Alpha planet. This was home, this is where we all began.

Rofl Try again. Or go direct to the channel. Each major revision to the draft i re-uploaded a new render. But that meant the old id link stopped working.
It is passable for a mockup, tho given i've spent hours on this already, its sort of a bit crap so far.
But it is a good Mock up.

Next script bit.
We cut to the War room in the stargate space station..
The faction leaders are discussing the Ships log; they comment that this extra data combined with the information retrieved from the crashed battlestar found on the brotherhood planet has given them a complete set of data which the id code of this lost captain has allowed them to unlock and play back..
Scene scrolls to the view screen, and fades out to another scene, captioned 20,000 years ago (or appropriate time frame) with another reference to a season, and some non-nonsensical time index (4th age etc)
May need some radio chatter sound effects here. Need some sort of landscape or geo vista to scroll across and fade in some music, maybe a city fly by. Have some excited solders in a tank or other vehicle engaging some other soldiers or vehicles, like war is some stupid game.
Scene leads to event mentioned in earlier scene, landscape gradually darkens over the battle until a character looks up... and see's the thing approaching... the battle gradually grinds to a halt as both sides notice it.
May need some epic shooting sound effects.
Notes: this is the actual start of the movie, the earlier scene may need to be moved partially before the starting credits; and shortened. Pre-film teaser style. Maybe cut the title fade in after the initial space fly by and reposition the music, then have the credits/publishing credits cut within the intro.
Really need someone better at this stuff to help but cant be helped.
Another option is cut in credits over the thing they see when they look up and suitable ominous music.
Could also do it flash back style..
Have a bunch of short scenes - eg.. a city, a battle, the thing in the sky, everything attacking the thing in the sky; the thing in the sky firing on the ground, the planet exploding, a scene with a bunch of ships on collision course with the big thing and a planet in the background, a bunch of ships exploding against the big thing, big thing's lights go out, and a few heavily damaged ones spinning off into space, a shot of a ship on fire clearly about to crash into the ground(brotherhood ship); a scene of another ship (the spacehulk on the fire planet) crashing through an asteroid belt with a firey planet in the background, a shot of the same ship torn and back broken crashed on the fire planet.
Something like that. Although that may make a good title credit script for subsequent episodes.
Anyone feel free to throw in some ideas here.

That sound like a good time for some animation to come in, its quite hard to film all that on minecraft smoothly, ie; so the camera doesn't see someone flick on a red stone switch, and make that "thing-in-the-sky" (i love how explicative you are) fire at the ground. Im not really following the plot of the end, but at the end of the film/animation/video there could be a lone enderman in the middle of the ruins, looking around OR, like dramaticaly look into the camera, or some previously unseen enemy stalk up to the ruins of a commanding ship and THE look dramatily at the camera, but you cant see its/hes/shes/zies face cause its like covered in shadows or somthing, i dont know.

The thing in the sky is basically a variation of the actual dark fortress structure, probably with the stuff you cant see not actually there to make it load faster! (ha!) The dark fortress itself was in some earlier discussions suggested that it was a larger mothership version of the smaller darkstars that have been seen all about the place. So where it is now could be argued (with that big ^&%^&% hole around it) was an aborted attempt at destroying this planet.. it is a little lame, but lacking any better plot best ive thought of so far. The bedrock space station in the end, is also the remains of the mighty fortress you start in on the alphawar server - or perhaps the paladin fortress which is more a simiar size. As much as I hate to admit it tho, for a really good movie story we may need to "fake it" a bit on stuff and use the same animation studio software they use for a lot of the send-up music videos like fallen kingdom or the creeper/minecraft gangnam style movies. In-game Fly bys with dark backdrops will only get us so far As it is I may need to world edit in some stuff in order, then from a console undo/redo so the objects appear stop-motion style. For example a crashing space ship could have debris crash into the ground before it. This would require a setup like: 1. have some hidden wiring to trigger TNT and a 2nd player off shot. 2: the 2nd player does a /redo or /undo so that we get some spoke trails appearing behind flaming objects and have a few undo events queued up so that they just go /redo /redo 3: *hit a button* *tnt* explodes* / 4: redo /redo *ship hurtles toward camera 10 blocks a time* 5: /redo *ship hits ground* *hit switch* *triggered explosions along crash path* etc etc.. can be done small scene at a time stop motion style, but using animation studio would smooth out the entire effect.

Interesting... I have sooooooooooo many ideas and thoughts for the story, and also the skills and motivation for the movie, unfortunately I have some things on my mind these days that haven't been sorted yet.. sigh... But I feel we can afford to wait a little, I mean there's no rush, I know Nathan even think the server is not at the "release stage" yet so we'll see... keep me informed if possible.

Ye, basically when server is ready for release - we could set up the movie (bit like yogs or the fallen kingdom dude does etc) Then at the movie end.. when all the smoke clears just have it say simply.. AND you can PLAY on this server HERE: BAM! have to be a pretty epic movie tho cause ppl need to keep watching to the end.. which makes things difficult.. 12 year olds and 3 minute attention spans means we need to have epic sh*t happen at least every 3 minutes Anyway its a slow project at this point. No point rushing it - and the epic tour video prooves at least a bunch of small takes cut together can work.
