Hi, I have been looking at different maps for ideas - and this project brief seemed a good idea..
The Urban Renewal Project.
What this is basically is implementing building standards - and player regulation of these rules. In such a way it makes it easier for casual players to go exploring.
Basically: 1: Roads should connect stuff. 2: Waterfronts should look tidy 3: Street lights 4: Do not block traffic 5: A tree should be a tree or not there at all. No anti-gravity experiments with leaves please. (otherwise i may install "Physics" you dont want me to do that) 6: Build Legs/Supports/Arches/Stilts/Foundations to support your buildings. 7: No block towers. If you must use one, remove it afterwards. 8: No Griefing! Especially not under the excuse of urban renewal. 9: A dirt house is not a house unless it is underground. Dont make dirt houses.
Or in Detail: 1: Within 1000 blocks of spawn: Any town or estate built within 50-100 blocks of another town or estate, should build/connect a road at least to the gate/edge of that other town or estate. (Or nearest existing road) Outside of 1000 blocks from spawn, roads to nearby stuctures within your visual range should be adequate. Connecting roads can be cobble, stone brick, gravel. (internal paths in your areas can be whatever style matches your build, connecting roads are roads outside your land) You dont have to build roads through peoples stuff, just near to it. (This is not to be used as a pretext to what amounts to griefing. ie "moral griefing")
2: Any building immediately next to water should have some sort of harbour/boardwalk/pier particularly where a lot of sand or random quarying has made the waterfront look untidy and messy. (Basically cover up your random digging between land and water with something so it looks neat not messy.) If you are somewhere remote, just line the water with some sand or dirt so it looks tidier.
3: Roads should have street lights. In the country a single torch on a block every dozen or so blocks is more than enough. In the city put in street lamps similar to the NPC village street lamps style. (Glowstone or Lamp Block or Torch on a fence post) At least at intersections.
4: Do not build on roads.. or if you do; redirect the road around your build or make an arch/bridge over/under the road. Roads should be clear to travel on at all times - and not too windy.
5: COMPLETELY remove trees or replant them after. Me and every other server in the world is sick of "floating leaves" If we find too many "floaties" we may start deporting players to mars... where there is no trees.
6: Plausability - Support your structures. Build walls, or arches foundations supports.. whatever. Unless it is a space ship, "heaven village", aircraft, balloon or space station.. it shouldn't be floating in the air. A heaven village is defined as an area built so high it is outside of visual range with the ground. It should look "heavenly" some dirt in the sky does not qualify. ( we may decide to //replace dirt, grass gravel) look at minecraft city for some "heavenly" examples. Another possibility is a balloon house. This is usually a wooden platform with wool balloons built over it with the appearance of being held up by balloons. (One 3x3 balloon holding up a 100x100 town does not count) Sometimes, there are floating islands on the map. You can build on these, so long as the original island shape is dominant. Building a 30x30 mansion on 2 dirt blocks your found does not qualify. But building a 10x10 house on a 30x30 island is fine. Some of our most epic buildings are on islands. Learn from them.
7: Towers 1 block wide serving no useful purpose can be removed by anyone. (antennas do not count - once again not to be used as an excuse for "moral" griefing)
8: No Griefing using the excuse of "urban renewal" If you find a building that is in poor shape, you can attempt to tidy around it; (Eg, build some supports to hold it up, remove floating trees, replant farms, repair fences) but the original structure itself should be left alone. If the structure shows obvious grief damage, use the /ticket system to report it, and a staff member may attempt / suggest repairs at their discretion.
9: Please use some thought when building houses. A pile of dirt looks ugly. Use other materials please. If your house is underground or in the side of a hill that is fine, but at least decorate the interior and maybe line the doorway with stone to give it a bunker or temple vibe.
Footnote: Roads should be big enough to go galloping by on a horse.
